The Global University Summit (GUS) was held over a three-day period from 29 April to 1 May in Chicago, the United States. First held in Sapporo in 2008 at the instigation of Hiroshi Komiyama, then-president of the University of Tokyo, the GUS has been convened in advance of the G8 Leaders Summit to discuss pressing international issues from a neutral academic viewpoint. This year’s Summit, the fifth in the series, was co-hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), an academic consortium of 13 research universities located in the US Midwest. It brought together 75 university leaders from 30 countries as well as senior executives from global companies including Boeing, BP, Elsevier, and Monsanto.
