Guidebook

When searching for a private apartment, you will need to understand common practices and systems that are specific to Japan such as key money (rei-kin), deposits (shiki-kin), and guarantor system. This Guidebook introduces tips for finding housing and information on Japan-specific customs and systems for private accommodations. We hope this will be of use.

Guarantor System

To rent an apartment in Japan, you are often required to have someone who can act as your guarantor (usually a Japanese national). The University of Tokyo offers a service called the 'Joint Guarantor Assistance System' exclusively to international students who meet certain conditions set out by the University. Under the system, the Head of the International Support Group acts as a guarantor. For details, check https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/adm/inbound/en/life-housing-g.html
