1. Study Abroad

Application via University

   One semester to a year

  • University-wide Student Exchange Program
    Under this program, students study at one of the overseas universities with which the University of Tokyo has concluded a memorandum of understanding on student exchange. Students are exempted from paying tuition for the destination university by paying tuition for the University of Tokyo. This program is available to all students throughout the university.
  • Inter-departmental Student Exchange
    Student exchange programs offered to students of each Faculty/Graduate School (hereinafter, “Department”), instead of the entire University, are called inter-departmental student exchanges. Various unique inter-departmental student exchange programs are available at the University of Tokyo, including the AIKOM (Abroad in Komaba) Program of the College of Arts and Sciences Senior Division.
            International Academic Exchange Agreements
  • UC Berkeley/Davis Programs (Administered by the Division of International Affairs, The University of Tokyo)
    This program sends students to two schools of the University of California, under their respective partnership agreements. Since this is not a student exchange program, payment of tuition for the destination university is required. Students are allowed to take a leave of absence while participating in this program.

   From a few weeks to 3 months

  • The University of Tokyo Short-Term Summer Study-Abroad Programs with Scholarships
    The University of Tokyo selected more than 50 study abroad programs shorter than 3 months offered by leading universities in the world, encouraging UTokyo students to participate with scholarships granted by UTokyo. (Some conditions should be fulfilled to be awarded scholarships.) A wide variety of programs are available, such as intensive small-group courses including discussions with the world’s top-class students, sets of lectures to study your specific field and also language-focused programs.
    -  IARU Global Summer Program (IARU GSP)
    - “Overseas Experience Project for UTokyo Students,” a program hosted by an alumni volunteer group to support short-term study abroad

    - Short study abroad supporting program for graduate students
     
  • Order-made program and customized programs-
    These programs (in summer and winter)are specially designed for UTokyo students under cooperation with scholarships provided by UTokyo. (There are some conditions for scholarships)
    - Order-made programs
    These programs are conducted by UTokyo academic staff cooperating with partner universities abroad. They are a combination of lectures, fieldwork, group work and exchange with local students.
    - Customized Programs
    These programs are conducted by UTokyo's partner universities by customizing existing programs especially for UTokyo students, particularly those who are not confident in their English proficiency. They consist of lectures by academic staff from the partner universities as well as language support.

Individual Application

  • Visiting Student Programs of overseas universities
    Study abroad programs offered by organizations outside the University of Tokyo or private scholarship funds
    Several overseas universities accept students from abroad under the status of Visiting Student for a period from a semester to a year. There are also programs offered by private scholarship funds or other organizations outside the University of Tokyo, with scholarships that cover all or a part of the costs. Students may take a leave of absence from the University of Tokyo while participating in the program.

   From a few weeks to 3 months

  • Summer programs of the world’s major universities
    Many universities throughout the world offer various summer programs such as intensive courses and language lessons that are available to students of other universities. Students may individually apply for and participate in such programs.
  • Language study using private study abroad agencies

2. Overseas Internships/International Volunteers

  • Programs for experience-based activities (conducted overseas)
    The University of Tokyo, setting an educational goal of developing tough, global students for the next generation, provides undergraduate students with various opportunities to engage in hands-on activities.
  • Overseas internships by the Todai Students Overseas Experience Project
    With support from alumni volunteer groups, students can experience working at overseas companies (mainly the overseas affiliates of Japanese companies).
  • IARU Campus Sustainability Student Exchange
  • Learn, Live and Intern in China (LLIC) Programme at the University of Hong Kong

  • Other internship/volunteer programs offered by companies/organizations

3. Other International Exchanges

  • International exchanges in experience-based activity programs
  • Overseas training and student meetings hosted by various organizations outside of the University of Tokyo
    Several short-term programs that are wholly or partially funded by their respective organizers are offered every year, inviting UTokyo Students to participate in overseas training programs or student meetings. These programs provide students with opportunities to gain international experience at a low cost.

    Information about other programs made known to the University of Tokyo, including those funded wholly or partially by their organizers, is available on the University websites and SNS. Students are recommended to check for such information frequently.

4. Study at Graduate Schools Abroad after Graduation

 At present, the University of Tokyo mainly supports students studying abroad while they are at the University. For those who plan to enter a graduate school abroad after graduation, the University provides relevant information in various forms.
