Intermediatheque Opening

March 21, 2013

Date of activity: March 21, 2013

On March 21, 2013 the Intermediatheque (IMT) opened on the second and third floor of the former Tokyo Central Post Office, within the JP Tower located in the Tokyo Marunouchi district.

This new museum is a public facility, jointly operated by Japan Post Co. Ltd. and the University Museum, the University of Tokyo (UMUT). The second and third floors of the former Tokyo Central Post Office, a five-storied historical building representative of Showa modernist architecture, have been renovated as a museum space. As indicated by its name, the facility is dedicated to bridging between all categories of expressive media with the intention of promoting the creation of new forms of cultural content. The core of this project is a permanent exhibition of the scientific and cultural heritage accumulated by the University of Tokyo since its foundation in 1877. The design techniques realizing the revival of this historical heritage within the contemporary urban cityscape is one of the highlights of the exhibition.

Special exhibitions and events will also present the fruits of cutting-edge contemporary scientific research and artistic expression in harmony with the permanent exhibition. The Intermediatheque’s unique activities will also include an original comprehensive education program as an extension of the University’s education and research activities, as well as a boutique presenting original goods resulting from the museum’s activities.
