The Second UTokyo-Tsinghua Strategic Partnership Joint Symposium @ Tsinghua University on “Multidiscipline”

The Second UTokyo-Tsinghua Strategic Partnership Joint Symposium @ Tsinghua University on “Multidiscipline” took place from 13 - 15 April 2017.
 
Vice President Qikun Xue hosted the Welcome Reception on April 13 attended by more than 150 faculty members, researchers and students from the two universities and other dignitaries, including Ambassador Yutaka Yokoi from the Embassy of Japan in China.
 
At the beginning of the plenary session in the morning of the second day, Prof. Naoto Sekimura, Vice President and Deputy Director of the Division of International Affairs, started the plenary session on the morning of the second day with an opening remark and explanation on the aim and the ideas of the strategic partnership. In his speech, Prof. Sekimura stated that judging from the current situation of the active interaction among faculty members and students between the two universities, a strong base for the diverse research activities already existed between us, and expressed hope for the establishment of a special relationship, strengthening and development in the areas of humanities, and further enhancement for the mobility of undergraduate students and administrative staff as a whole.
 
Two keynote speeches, “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education” from Prof. Mamoru Mitsuishi, Executive Director of UTokyo and “Road to Excellence - How Chinese Scientists Move Up Along the Ladders of Global Scientific Research” from Prof. Lan Xue, Dean of the Public Safety School of Tsinghua University followed.
Many researchers and students from both universities listened studiously to the two speeches and actively participated in the lively discussion that followed.
 
Ten separate parallel sessions followed the plenary session which are listed below. The sessions of “Accessibility Development” and “Entrepreneurship Education” were added to the existing wide variety of academic interactions with a long-term cooperation, giving true meaning to the occurrence of multidiscipline academic exchanges.

This joint symposium was a biggest event after the "UTokyo Week at Tsinghua" which took place in 2008, with more than a total of 250 people taking part. This number included 80 members from UTokyo, staff from the Embassy of Japan in China and UTokyo’s Beijing Alumni Association, faculty and administrative staff, students and volunteers from Tsinghua University. 
 
The strategic partnership between the two universities will continue to work towards further development under the leadership of Prof. Satoshi Watanabe from the School of Engineering, UTokyo and Prof. Wei Pan from the School of Materials Science & Engineering, Tsinghua University as coordinators.
