ETHZ-UTokyo Strategic Partnership Symposium on Science, Design, Manufacturing and Information

The University of Tokyo and ETH Zürich signed a strategic partnership agreement in January 2016 to promote research and exchange of students between the two universities and on its anniversary, the “ETHZ-UTokyo Strategic Partnership Symposium on Science, Design, Manufacturing and Information” was held at the University of Tokyo’s Hongo Campus on January 19-20, 2017.

The symposium began with an opening statement from the Executive Vice President for International Affairs, Professor Masashi Haneda, and a lecture about the strategic partnership by Professor Naoto Sekimura, Deputy Director General of the Division of International Affairs.
Additionally, over the two days, participants of the symposium saw eight presentations and panel discussions held by ETHZ and UTokyo faculty members and graduate students covering various fields, including elementary particle physics, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, information science, pharmaceutical and chemical process, and architectural design.

A total of 25 people gave presentations (15 from ETHZ and 10 from UTokyo) to the more than 150 participants attending the symposium. One Swiss pharmaceutical company, F. Hoffmann-La Roche, and two companies from Japan also held presentation sessions.

During the seven presentation sessions as well as the Q&A sessions which followed, participants discussed their respective fields of research and also shared the achievements of the strategic partnership. A poster session was also held as part of the evening session of the first day.

The symposium ended with a discussion led by Professor Kaoru Yamanouchi, Vice Dean of the School of Science and lead of the University of Tokyo’s group working together with ETHZ, on how to further develop the strategic partnership.
