Third UTokyo Strategic Partnership Symposium

April 4, 2017

Date of activity: March 17, 2017

The Third UTokyo Strategic Partnership Symposium was held in the Auditorium, Faculty of Science Bldg. 2 on Friday, March 17, 2017. Professor Masaaki Yamada, Distinguished Research Fellow, Princeton University, along with faculty and staff members from UTokyo attended the symposium which totaled more than 80 participants.

The University of Tokyo established the “Strategic Partnerships UTokyo” project in October 2014. These relationships are designed to enhance the strength of each university, promote educational exchange based on research exchanges conducted by each department, and reach beyond the standard academic exchange agreements that universities usually conclude. The Global Campus Promotion Office of the Division of International Affairs plays a supporting role in these exchanges between and among the diverse departments of the University of Tokyo and its partnership universities.

At the symposium, presentations were given by the faculty members in charge on several distinct projects, along with presentations from students who experienced exchanges abroad through projects with Peking University which is actively implementing exchanges not only of faculty and students but also administrative staff; Massachusetts Institute of Technology which is implementing a student education program that leads to high quality research outcomes in collaboration with the industry; the Australian National University which is implementing an interdisciplinary undergraduate student exchange program. Seven other presenters also shared their good practices by showcasing activities and future plans of their unique research and academic programs with their overseas partner universities.

Phase 2 of the Strategic Partnership Universities Project will begin from AY2017 and it was decided that the University of Tokyo will give intensive support to diverse activities with the ten “primary strategic partnership universities” as well as assist in various activities with “prospective strategic partnership universities”.
