Call for participants in the "Harvard University's Justice with Michael Sandel" to be held at Yasuda Auditorium

The University of Tokyo Center for Research and Development of Higher Education is hosting a special lecture in Hongo Campus's Yasuda Auditorium this August, "Justice with Michael Sandel," featuring Harvard Professor Michael Sandel, well known from the NHK program "Justice with Michael Sandel." This lecture will be in the same style as the "Justice with Michael Sandel," where participants will engage in a discussion with Professor Sandel on the topic of "Justice" in modern society. In the recently released University Action Scenario, the University of Tokyo has announced its aim to educate individuals with a global outlook while maintaining a world-class and rich culture and deep specialization. Professor Sandel's lecture should be an excellent opportunity for students to acquire the skill to communicate while maintaining an awareness of the diverse values of their interlocutors. In addition, Professor Sandel's lecture, valuing student interaction and communication in teaching, should prove thought-provoking even for University faculty and administrative staff and contribute to the improvement of education at the University of Tokyo.

The University of Tokyo is recruiting 250 participants from among its students, academic and administrative staff. In addition, NHK will recruit 500 participants from the general public.

Applicants must meet the following criteria.

  • Students specializing in areas related to the topic of the lecture (Law, Politics, Economics, Social Science, History of Social Thought, Ethics, etc.) or with a deep interest in those fields.
  • Simultaneous translation shall be provided, so participants do not need to be able to speak English.
  • This lecture shall be aired on NHK educational TV in the autumn. In addition, the lecture will be publicized on the University's website and available over the internet from TodaiTV.
  • In addition to being broadcast, the lecture may also be published as a DVD and in other formats.
  • Participants renounce any right or claim whatsoever to copyright over all or any part of the content of the lecture.
