The Funding Program for World-leading Innovative R&D on Science and Technology, (called FIRST), is designed to rigorously promote world-leading, innovative research and enhance Japan’s mid-to-long term international competitiveness and overall strength in wide-ranging fields. This Program was established as part of the government’s supplementary budget for fiscal 2009.
Unlike existing funding schemes, FIRST is a unique research funding program that prioritizes researchers and their initiative. Its aim is to pass on to the public the benefits of research findings by the fund’s participants.
Eleven members of our faculty have been selected as core researchers for the Program, and the University itself will serve as a research support institution for five FIRST-funded projects.
