Graduate School of Science/Faculty of Science
The Graduate School of Science and Faculty of Science conduct a broad range of education and research in science. Science's objectives are to understand the mechanisms of nature, and to pursue the universal laws lurking in their depths. In most cases, scientific research does not aim for immediate applications but is advanced in accordance with the intellectual interests of diverse researchers. The deep comprehension of nature gained as a result has not only supported the convenience of contemporary civilization through various applications but has also enriched our views of nature and the universe. Forming the deepest foundation of the culture built by humankind, science is the driving force opening up our future. The words, "The Creation and Transmission of Science," are loftily extolled in the Charter of the Faculty of Science. The Graduate School of Science has six departments: Physics, Astronomy, Earth and Planetary Science, Chemistry, Biophysics and Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences, and eight affiliated facilities: the Botanical Gardens, Marine Biological Station, Research Center for Spectrochemistry, Laboratory for Earthquake Chemistry, Institute for Astronomy, Center for Nuclear Study, Research Center for the Early Universe, and Center for Ultrafast Intense Laser Science. Each field of specialization is operated in collaboration with mainstay courses and with departments and research institutes both within Japan and overseas, covering wide-ranging spheres within the basic subject. Each department has been developing highly advanced research, as is plainly indicated by the fact that all of them have had research adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as 21st Century COE Programmes. The Faculty of Science has 10 departments: Mathematics, Information Science, Physics, Astronomy, Earth and Planetary Physics, Earth and Planetary Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biophysics and Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, and Bioinformatics and Systems Biology. The Education Program in the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Course and the Actuary/Accounting Program were set up in the 2001 and 2005 academic years respectively. The Faculty of Science is the only faculty that covers almost all fields in the subject. |
