Ocean Research Institute
The Ocean Research Institute, Japan's general oceanographic research and educational institution, was established in 1962 within The University of Tokyo as a national research center. Since then, the Institute has carried out a wide range of leading research in the fields of marine physics, chemistry, biology, geoscience, and resources. In the 21st century, humankind must learn to sustain and preferably enhance the Earth's environment, which supports myriad life forms. To respond to these demands, we must greatly improve our knowledge of the global ocean-earth system. To develop a comprehensive understanding that transcends the boundaries of current academic disciplines, the Institute is pursuing a dynamic research program. Complementary to this ambitious agenda, the Institute is redoubling efforts in graduate education to nurture and train new generations of researchers who will address the critical challenges of this century. The oceans constitute a scientific frontier covering 70% of our planet, and the overarching goal of the Ocean Research Institute is to advance our understanding of the oceans so as to contribute to the future of Earth and humankind. |
