It has been going on from ancient times in China; it is said to take place as spring arrives, while praying for the year’s plentiful crop. In Japan, we can observe that this practice started to appear in records, mainly among the nobles beginning in the Heian period, and became an annual event on March 3rd (or Joshi – day of Plums - on the lunar calendar). It also took place during festivals and New Year throughout the society. This scene was drawn as a scenery of spring at the Imperial Palace, depicting the traditional events that took place in March.
‘Scenes In and Around Kyoto – Folding screen’ are pictures drawn on folding screens that depicts Kyoto and the surrounding major point of interest during the Sengoku era in the 16th century. The originals at the National Museum of Japanese History and Uesugi Museum are well known. The picture is on the left was reproduced by Yukari Muraoka at the historical material research and preservation technique center (in charge of reproduction) adding gold, gold clouds, coloring based on the copy at Tokyo National Museum which was reproduced from the original (no longer in existence) using watercolor during the Edo period. This panel was created to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the publication of historical records by the historical records research center to coincide with the special exhibit ‘What speaks throughout the years’ (2001-02) at the Tokyo National Museum.
