UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO FORUM 2004 IN SWEDEN |
|
The University of Tokyo, with the objective of transmitting widely overseas the development and fruits of the academic research taking place on its campuses and also the activities of its outstanding scholars, has been holding international forums in major areas overseas annually since 2000. At these forums, not only are the fruits of research at The University of Tokyo announced, for their objective is also to advance joint research in the future through exchanges conducted among scholars, the forums aim as well to nurture future generations through exchanges of students, who will shoulder the future of international academic exchanges. So far The University of Tokyo has held three such academic forums abroad. In January 2000, this university held its first UT Forum 2000 in Boston on the theme of Science, Technology and Art on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus. In December, that same year it held the second UT Forum 2000 in the Silicon Valley and Bay Area on the Future of Life Science and Biomedical Research in Universities on the Stanford University campus. Then, in November 2002, it held the UT Forum 2002 in Singapore on the National University of Singapore campus on the subject of "Human Communities and Contexts of Nature. Meanwhile, a University of Tokyo delegation led by President Sasaki visited Sweden in October 2002, where it concluded exchange agreements with Stockholm University and Uppsala University. And in October 2003, the presidents and vice-presidents of major Swedish universities paid an observational visit to The University of Tokyo’s new Kashiwa campus, and a Japan-Sweden University Presidents` Joint Seminar was held on this university’s main Hongo campus. Thus the importance of further advancing academic exchanges between our two countries has been recognized. Consequently, the UT Forum 2004 in Sweden has been conceived as something that will contribute even more to the concrete development of academic exchanges between The University of Tokyo and renowned Swedish universities than the previous UT Forums did on their respective sites. In a divergence from the pattern of our previous forums, we wish to hold our proposed UT Forum in Sweden on four themes at four different universities in Sweden and its vicinity. In other words, we would like to hold the forum for a full day respectively on fields in basic science at Uppsala University (particularly on the themes of neutrinos/physics and astronomy), in fields of medical and life sciences at the Karolinska Institute (especially, molecular medicine), on economics and management at the Stockholm School and on environment at Stockholm University. Based on the fruits of the Japan-Sweden University Presidents' Joint Seminar, we intend to call out for broad participation so as to include scholars in related fields at universities other than the ones where the forums are to be held. In particular, we plan to ask for positive support in P.R. activities from the various universities whose cooperation we will be requesting as collaborators. We are, moreover, thinking of dispatching some students (graduate students) from The University of Tokyo to Sweden at the time of the UT Forum to set up opportunities for exchanges with their peers at the universities holding the forum and the cooperating universities in order to promote opportunities for exchanges among students, who will be shouldering the next generation. |
