Enrollment in a faculty

To enroll in a faculty of the University of Tokyo you are required to pass the same general screening test as Japanese students or  a special screening test for students who have graduated from foreign schools. You will require four years for graduation; six years for graduation from the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Veterinary Science in the Faculty of Agriculture. This page is an explanation of the special screening test for graduates of foreign schools. Most of the lectures in the faculties of the University of Tokyo are delivered in Japanese, even for foreign students. As a result, foreign students must master the Japanese language before they enroll in the University of Tokyo.

Special Class-1 Screening

(For foreign students who are not permitted to be domiciled permanently in Japan)

The following is a summary of the special screening for the last academic year. Applicants planning to apply for this screening and enroll in a faculty of the University of Tokyo from the coming April must obtain a new application form in the current academic year (see "Requesting an application from for enrollment" below). The new application form will be distributed at the beginning of the prior to enrollment.

Qualifications for application

A person who has obtained the following qualifications in the period from April 1 five years prior to application to March 31 of the year of application (i.e. during the five academic years preceding enrolment) and meets the appropriate requirements may apply for Special Class-1 screening.

  1. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
    Applicants must satisfy either of the following requirements.
    1. Have completed or be scheduled to complete a 12-year course of school education at a foreign facility or be designated and approved as eligible by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
    2. Be at least 18 years old and have earned, at an institution not in Japan, an international baccalaureate granted by the International Baccalaureate Bureau in accordance with the Swiss Civil Code, an Abitur qualification permitting enrollment in a university in the Federal Republic of Germany, or a baccalaureate permitting enrollment a univirsity in the French Repabulic.
  2. REQUIREMENTS
    All of the following requirements must be satisfied.
    1. The applicant must take all the standard tests in the specified subjects in the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students, held in June and November each  year.
      (Note: The applicant can choose to take the test in Japanese or in English.)
    2. For liberal arts program applicants, the specified subjects are "Japanese" ,"Japan and the world","Mathematics (Course 1)". For natural science program applicants, the specified subjects are "Japanese", "Science (any two of Physics, Chemistry, Biology)", and "Mathematics (Course 2)".
    3. The applicant must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Screening method

A primary screening and secondary screening are conducted, and health examination data is checked.
  1. Primary screening
    The document-based screening is carried out using the following information:
    1. results gained in educational facilities from which the applicant has graduated
    2. results of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students
    3. TOEFL score
    4. results of any standard tests taken by the applicant in his / her home country

  2. Secondary screening
    Those passing the primary screening are required to complete a short essay test and an interview.
