The University of Tokyo was the first Japanese university to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on both Coursera and edX. Since 2013, UTokyo MOOC has launched 22 courses (10 on Coursera and 12 on edX). More than 680,000 students from over 201 countries have enrolled in these courses, and more than 40,000 students have completed them.

MOOCs are offered on a variety of platforms by world-class universities and institutions. In addition to self-improvement, learners use MOOCs to improve their professional skills. MOOCs’ individually validated certificates can help learners advance in their workplace and make career changes.
