49 university students from India visited under the JST Sakura Science Program
On 28 September, 49 university students from India visited the University of Tokyo under the JST Sakura Science Program.
The Sakura Science Program is a program of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) which has invited talented people from overseas for short-term visits to Japan, giving them the opportunity to experience Japan's cutting-edge science and technology as well as its culture.
In the morning, following an explanation about "Studying at the University of Tokyo" and "The University of Tokyo India Office", students from the University of Tokyo Indian Students Association introduced "Studying and Life in Japan". In the Q&A session which followed the presentations, five Indian students answered various questions based on their experiences. The Indian students then visited the Yasuda Auditorium, Akamon (Red Gate), and the General Library during the campus tour. The library houses a portrait of Rabindranath Tagore, the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, donated by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru during his visit to our university in 1957.
In the afternoon, the students were divided into six groups and visited laboratories in the Graduate School of Engineering, the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the Department of Physics in the Graduate School of Science, the International Center for Elementary Particle Physics, the Graduate School of Public Policy, the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, where they toured laboratories and other facilities to experience cutting-edge research. The students were also given lectures by the professors and engaged in lively discussions with students at the University of Tokyo.
