Please give a short introduction about yourself.

My name is Sunil Adhikary. My hometown is Chitwan, a district of Province No. 3 of Nepal. Chitwan is a low land area having an altitude of 200 meters above the sea level. I completed my Master of Science and PhD. (Science) degrees from Nagoya University, Japan. I was fortunate to receive the Japanese Government Scholarship (MONBUKHAGAKUSOU) for my Master’s study and NGK (Nihon Gaishi) scholarship for my Ph.D. study. Currently, I am working as a Professor and the campus chief of Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal.

What is your favorite thing about Nagoya?

I lived in Nagoya for around 9 years. In general, I have observed that people there are very broad-minded and are very kind and helpful to foreigners. I was also impressed by the huge and well-managed parks in the city. I enjoyed living in Nagoya because it is such a spacious and clean city.

In what ways has your impression of Japan?

I thought without a car, life would be very tough in Japan. But I was surprised to find the public transportation system very efficient and reliant, so I realized that one can live in Japan comfortably without a personal vehicle.

What attracted you to choose Nagoya University as a place to study?

The name of Nagoya University (which is one of the most famous national universities of Japan), and the scholarship (Japanese Government Scholarship under UNESCO Graduate study program) that was offered, attracted me to choose Nagoya University as a place to study.

What attracted you to work in a current position after studying in Japan? In what ways, do you like your work?

I found that the lives of Professors and researchers are more enjoyable and creative than the lives of civil servants (before going to Japan for my higher study, I was working as a civil servant of the Nepal Government). I am enjoying the freedom to study and research as well as helping young ones to become educated and responsible citizens of the country.

Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be contemplating studying in Japan?

Japan is a culturally rich beautiful country, where the people are kind and humble. The universities are well equipped, and the professors are highly qualified and dedicated to their fields. You can find an excellent study environment there. In addition to your study, you will have opportunities to learn other fine aspects of life such as cleanliness, orderliness, citizen’s responsibility, etc. I strongly recommend Japan as an ideal place for your higher studies.
