Future Directions in Medical Education (4-time lecture series)
In this four-lecture series we will examine the challenges to our current models of teaching and assessment at the medical student and resident level. We will critically appraise current approaches and the reasons for a need to change. Using examples from Canada we will look at new models, innovative curricula, novel approaches to assessment, and methods to evaluate effectiveness.
“I hope that, taken together, these four lectures will stimulate a positive change in medical education in Japan”
-- Linda Snell

Lecture 1: New Models of Medical Education <Summary of Lecture 1> This lecture will look at the problems with our current education models and outline the need to change, in particular, whether we are producing competent physicians able to address the needs of society. We will examine some of the newer models to see if they might address these challenges.  We will then look in more detail at one model, competency-based medical education (CBME), and discuss why we might move to this approach, outlining the characteristics of this model and defining key terms. We will end by comparing CBME models and innovations around the world and discussing the application of these to the Japanese context.

Speaker: Linda Snell, MD, MHPE, FRCPC, MACP Professor of Medicine Centre for Medical Education, McGill University; Project Professor, International Research Center for Medical Education,  Graduate School of Medicine, the University of Tokyo

The lecture will be given in English.
