Also, six students were awarded for their academic excellence: Mr. Shigeo Yoshida (Master’s degree course at the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies), Mr. Takuma Izumi (Master’s degree course at the Graduate School of Science), Mr. Yuya Morimoto (Doctoral degree course at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology), Mr. Takayuki Hioki (Doctoral degree course at the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology), Mr. Ken Abe (graduate of the Doctoral degree course at the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences), and Mr. Hideaki Kato (Doctoral degree course at the Graduate School of Science).

Also awarded at the ceremony were the University of Tokyo President’s Grand Prizes, which are offered to individuals and organizations that enhance the honor of the University and whose particularly remarkable achievements serve to inspire students. In the fields of extracurricular and social activities, the Grand Prize was given to the team that won the Gold Medal at the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. The members of the team were: Mr. Kazuhiro Hosaka (Faculty of Science), Mr. Makoto Soejima (Faculty of Science), and Mr. Kensuke Imanishi (College of Arts and Sciences). In the fields of academic research, the Grand Prize was awarded to Ms. Yuan Hu (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences) who illustrated the effects of bacteria attached to pollen with the use of silkworms and to Mr. Toshiaki Shoji (Faculty of Economics) who shed new light on the influence of the Bank of Japan’s financial policies through the econometric approach.

After receiving a certificate, gift and words of congratulations from President Junichi Hamada, each award winner gave a presentation on his or her achievement. The ceremony was attended by an audience of about 140 people, including UTokyo students, academic and administrative staff and winners’ relatives, who all commended the winners on their activities and achievements.

A post-ceremony gathering was held at the Sanjo Conference Hall, where the awardees enjoyed friendly discussions with University executives and other academic and administrative staff. This was an intellectually stimulating event for everyone involved. We look forward to the winners’ further success in the future.
