Associate Professor Sayaka Uchida Awarded 2nd Annual AY 2013 CSJ Award for Women Chemists

May 9, 2014

Date of activity: March 28, 2014

The CSJ (Chemical Society of Japan) Award for Women Chemists is given to chemists and engineers who have achieved outstanding research results in the fundamentals and applications of chemistry and made significant contributions to improvement of the social status of women. Associate Professor Sayaka Uchida of the Department of Basic Science in the Division of Multidisciplinary Sciences (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) received the award this academic year.

Awarded research: “Rational Design and Synthesis of Functional Porous Ionic Crystals”

The awards ceremony was held as part of the CSJ 94th Spring Annual Meeting on March 28th, 2014.

Crystalline porous media with molecular-sized holes (in nanometers) can absorb gases, separate gas mixtures, or exchange matter with high efficiency. Ionic crystals (sodium chloride, etc.) are basic chemical compounds that are covered in high school chemistry. It has been difficult to fabricate ionic crystals with porous structures since the isotropic and long-range Coulomb force between ions make their structures dense. Associate Professor Uchida succeeded in synthesizing crystallic porous media by using molecular-type ions as a composition block unit. The media shows functionality of the absorption and separation of mixed gases, the exchange of ions, and catalytic reaction. This research spans across a wide range of fields such as inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and material chemistry. These findings are praised as bringing to light a new aspect of material chemistry.
