Press Conference to Host Amgen Scholars Program Receiving New Grant from the Amgen Foundation

Tokyo, Japan. (Nov. 19, 2014) – The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) has been awarded a two-year grant from the Amgen Foundation that will provide hands-on laboratory experience to undergraduate students through the Amgen Scholars Program. This is the first year that UTokyo will participate in the program, which aims to inspire the next generation of innovators by providing students with hands-on summer research opportunities at leading institutions across the globe. The University of Tokyo and Kyoto University have been selected by Amgen Foundation to be the hosts for the Amgen Scholars Program in Japan.
On Wednesday, November 19 a press conference was held by Amgen, Amgen Foundation, Kyoto University and UTokyo at the Ito International Research Center to commemorate the start of this program.
Dr. David M. Reese, Vice President, Amgen Inc., who attended the press conference said “Through the Amgen Foundation—Amgen’s primary philanthropic vehicle—we emphasize and deliver a suite of world-class science education initiatives that demonstrate Amgen’s commitment to science and society.”
“It gives us a great pleasure to be able to embark on this new partnership with the Amgen Foundation,” said Dr. Masako Egawa, Executive Vice President of the University of Tokyo. “We are confident that the hands-on experience in the laboratories, mentorship provided by our experienced faculty at the University of Tokyo and their time here in Japan will have a profound and lasting impact on the students’ interest in science. We hope that this experience they have gained at the University of Tokyo and their time here as Amgen Scholars will inspire many of them to pursue careers in a scientific field, and even some of them to return here to continue their studies as graduate students here in Tokyo.”
The program at UTokyo will take place over an 8 week period between June 8 and July 31, 2015, with 20 students (15 from universities overseas and 5 from Japanese universities including UTokyo) selected to participate. The Amgen Scholars selected will each receive financial support that will cover their return travel and accommodation expenses during the program and also receive a stipend to cover their daily expenses.
The participating Amgen Scholars will join one of the 40 research laboratories in 5 of the graduate schools and research institutes of UTokyo (Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Institute of Industrial Science) where they will gain valuable experience in research. Additionally there will be able to take part in tours and guidance about the university, and other events organized to maximize their experience as Amgen Scholars at UTokyo.
The application period is from November 19, 2014 through to February 2, 2015.
