* Must be taken together with another course
* No University of Tokyo credits will be awarded. Instead, students who successfully complete the course will be given a certificate of completion.
* Details of the course will be provided for those who wish to share the information with their home institution.

Program Period

Cancellation of the 2020 UTokyo Global Summer Program
Because of the impact worldwide of the coronavirus (COVID-19), we have taken the difficult decision to cancel this year’s UTokyo Global Summer Program, due to take place in June and July 2020. We are working on plans for Summer 2021, and will post information as soon as possible about dates and provisional content.

Lecture Themes

The University of Tokyo provides an introductory course for those new to Japan which will both facilitate participation in Japanese society and introduce characteristics of the Japanese language such as the Japanese writing system, elementary grammar, and communication patterns. With the Japanese language learnt in these classes we hope our students will be able to experience the language in a real life environment. To improve students' Japanese literacy, "practical" lessons, such as the use of dictionaries and word-processing programs, will also be included in this course to enable students to continue their study of the language when they return to their home country. This course is aimed at beginners of the Japanese language.

*Students who successfully finish the Introduction to the Japanese Language course will be given a certificate of completion.
