Some international students and foreign researchers may have difficulty in finding an apartment in Japan because of problems dealing with Japanese culturally-specific customs and realities such as deposits (shiki-kin), key money (reikin) and the guarantor system. As part of the project of "Measures to Promote the Settlement of Overseas Researchers and Students in Japan," the Division of International Affairs has created a guidebook for international students and foreign researchers to find private accommodations titled "Useful Tips for Finding Housing in Japan." This guidebook gathers together questions and concerns raised by foreign researchers and international students toward University of Tokyo staff members and local real estate agencies, and introduces tips for finding housing and information about Japanese culture-specific customs and systems to keep in mind during their search process. We hope this guidebook will be of use when searching for accommodations in Japan.

In order to rent an apartment in Japan, you need to have someone to act as your guarantor (usually a Japanese national). If it is difficult for international students who meet the University’s requirements to find a guarantor, the University of Tokyo offers a system called the "Joint Guarantor Assistance System" in which the Head of the International Student Support Group serves as guarantor for them. If international students would like to use this system, please visit the office of the International Student Support Group to receive an explanation about the system.
