Short Report

The Seminar on Higher Education in Japan was held in St. Xavier College on 24th November from 10:00 to 13:30. UTAAN (The University of Tokyo Alumni Association) member Dr. Hom Nath Chalise was responsible for the registration related tasks and more than 300 students participated in the program. Senior high school students (both +2 and A level students), undergraduate students (BBS, BSc, BIM, BSW, BA, CSIT) and Master’s level students (Microbiology) were attended the program. Ms. Saluja Chand, dean of women's, support the event on all aspect for the success of the program. Program started on time with the national anthem of Nepal followed by lighting lights in Panas.

Fr. Jiju Varghese, S.J. Principal of St. Xavier College, Maitighar welcomed all the delegates with the “Token of Love” from the college. He hearty welcomed all the delegates and expressed his happiness to have such a wonderful opportunity to host such an event together with the University of Tokyo Alumni Association of Nepal. He expressed his desire to continue such events, which provides opportunity to students to learn about Japanese Universities also and make a decision about their higher education, in the future.

The opening remarks was given by Mr. Deepak KC, representative of UTAAN, where he highlighted the importance of higher education in Japan. He was also an alumni of St. Xavier College. After Mr. Deepak KC introduced all the Japanese delegates and his speech a short documentary relating to Japan was shown.
Mr. Kazuhiko Aoki, India Liaison Officer, explained about the Japan Science and Technology Agency and the SAKURA program. Dr. Netra Prakash Bhandary, a professor at Ehime University, gave a presentation about the higher education opportunities at Ehime University. He emphasized that compared to other universities, the living and educational related cost is cheaper if students choose his university.
Dr. Goit Chandra Shekhar, Assistant Professor, Saitama University, talked about the opportunities of higher education in Japan in general and Saitama University in particular.
Dr. Tatsuki Kawaguchi, an associate professor from University of Aizu discussed about IT related educational opportunities in his university, while Mr. Shashank Shrestha, a doctorate students at UoA focused on the quality of education at his university. He also shared his experience while pursuing higher education in Japan.

During the Question & Answer session, few questions were raised whether there were any opportunities for social science students. As most of the university representatives were from the science and technology fields, UTAAN member Dr. Hom Nath Chalise answered about the opportunities of social science in Japan.
Mr. Khem Gyanwali, a doctorate student at UTokyo, presented UTokyo to the students. He talked about different the scholarship opportunities in Japan. He also highlighted about the cost of higher education in Japan. As a Nepali student, he shared his feelings about higher education in Japan, life in Japan and different types of opportunities while pursuing higher education in UTokyo.

After the presentation program was over, each participating universities has their booth set outside the hall and many students visited them for individual consultations and university related Q/As.
