UTokyo Forum 2013 in Chile and Brazil

Overview

     The UTokyo Forum 2013 was held in Santiago, Chile and São Paulo, Brazil from November 7th to 12th with the theme of “Global Emergence of Frontier Knowledge”. President Junichi Hamada, Executive Vice Presidents Masafumi Maeda, Yoichiro Matsumoto, Hiroyuki Yamato, and Masako Egawa, as well as Vice President Masashi Haneda participated in the Forum with more than 150 people from 20 different graduate schools and research institutes of the University of Tokyo.

     This was the ninth in the series of UTokyo Forum, and was, from the opening ceremony through to the keynote and poster sessions as well as the closing ceremony, held in collaboration with, among others, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, University of Chile, and University of São Paulo. Each of the sessions was attended by well over 200 people.

     Additionally, workshops were held by the various departments of UTokyo with their research exchange counterparts from each of the collaborating universities. These workshops provided a platform to exchange the latest research progress and results, as well as an opportunity for academic and human exchanges among the participants.

     Furthermore, the UTokyo Study Fair was held at the two universities in Chile, while in São Paulo and Brasilia, the University of Tokyo participated in the Japan Education Seminar 2013 (sponsored by JASSO - Japan Student Services Organization). At these events, the University of Tokyo welcomed more than 500 students and researchers in total at its booths, where it provided introductions about the University as well as consultations for studying abroad in Japan.

Summary of activities in Chile

  • A private meeting between President Hamada and President Ignacio Sánchez Díaz of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile was held prior to the forum in Chile. During the meeting, the two presidents discussed the importance of exchanges among faculty members in various fields, especially Japanese and Spanish languages.
  • Opening and closing ceremonies, keynote speeches, reception, research workshops, and Study Fair (attended by more than 100 students and researchers on each of the two days).
  • The Chile Akamon-kai was established as a UTokyo alumni association and held its first meeting on November 8th.

Summary of activities in Brazil

  • A private meeting between President Hamada and President João Grandino Rodas of the University of São Paulo was held prior to the forum in Brazil. During the meeting, the two presidents discussed the importance of exchanges among faculty members in various fields, especially Japanese and Portuguese languages, as well as the possibility of establishing a liaison office between the two universities.
  • Opening and closing ceremonies, keynote lectures, reception, research workshops, and the Japan Education Seminar. (The seminar held at the University of São Paulo on November 12th was attended by more than 100 students and researchers, while the seminar held at the University of Brasilia on November 14th was attended by more than 200 students and researchers).
  • A signing ceremony of the university-wide agreement and memorandum of understanding with the University of São Paulo and the letter of intention with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) was held during the opening ceremony.
  • The Brazil Akamon-kai was established as a UTokyo alumni association and held its first meeting on November 12th.
