Accommodations for International Students
The University of Tokyo has the following dormitories open to international students. These residences accept applications twice a year. If you wish to live in any of these residences you may submit an application form to your graduate school/faculty office in January (for occupation from April) or around July (for occupation from October).
However, because these residences have a limited number of rooms, it is not possible for all international students to be placed in these accommodations.

Toshima International Hall of Residence
*The wooden portion of Wing 1 of the Shirokane Dormitory (women's dormitory) became so old and dilapidated that it has become impossible to take up residence there. Instead, we have increased the number of rooms for female students in the Toshima International Hall of Residence in fiscal year 2007. |
The schedule and procedure for applying to The University of Tokyo international student accommodations (International Lodge, Mitaka International Hall of Residence, Toshima International Hall of Residence), Tokyo International Exchange Center, Ochanomizu University International House, and private companies’ dormitories are outlined below.
*Application for University of Tokyo international student accommodations
(International Lodge, Mitaka International Hall of Residence,
Toshima International Hall of Residence) and Tokyo International Exchange Center:
Applications are accepted twice a year (mid-January for admission in April, and around July for admission in October). Please apply through your faculty or graduate school.
*Application for Ochanomizu University International House:
Applications are accepted once a year, generally from December to mid-January for admission in April only. Please apply through your faculty or graduate school.
*Application for Companies' dormitories:
Some Japanese companies have accommodation for their staff, and in some cases they kindly let out some rooms to international students at the same rate as to their staff. Applications are accepted several times a year; please apply through the office of your faculty or department. Please note that almost all such rooms are single-sex accommodation and accept applications from male students only. Rooms for families or for female students are limited.
Please direct all inquiries to the Office of International Students within your department.

Furniture is usually not provided in rented apartments and other accommodations. You will usually have to provide such items as gas cookers, lights, rugs, curtains and other necessities yourself. Further, when signing a contract, students typically have to pay a deposit, key money, introduction fee and so on, in addition to an up-front payment of five to six months’rent. You will also need someone who will act as your guarantor.
Information on Apartments, Rooms to Let
Prices of privately-rented accommodations prices vary greatly depending on their distance from the nearest station, year of construction, sunlight, and location, but prices for a one-room apartment are usually in the range of 40,000 to 80,000 yen per month. In January 2005 The University of Tokyo CO-OP took over the role of providing information on apartments and rooms to let, which was previously carried out by the Student Welfare Division of the Student Affairs Department.
A variety of accommodations is handled, including accommodations entrusted directly by the landlord or landlady and those mediated through a real estate agent. The accommodations offered tend to be concentrated in areas around the university, such as Bunkyo-ku, Taito-ku, and Toshima-ku. You should check the accommodation carefully yourself, and feel free to consult your contact at the CO-OP as often as you wish with regard to contract procedures or any other issues, until you are sure you have found the right accommodation.
- The CO-OP Gotenshita shop(sport shop), located beside the staircase at the entrance to the Gotenshita Memorial Arena, provides information on accommodations.
- Hours of operation: 11:00-18:00
- Contact telephone number: +81-3-5841-7945
International students should consult with the International Student Support Group (1st floor, Administration Bureau Building 2), which also provides information on accommodations.
