At The University of Tokyo, some 2,500 international students from around 100 countries are passionately engaged in the pursuit of study and research. By accepting a diverse range of students and researchers from around the world, bringing with them differing languages, cultures and customs, we hope to discover fresh viewpoints and novel discoveries, and to cultivate a rich environment that will enable development through friendly competition.

This University aims to provide a suitable study environment to talented students regardless of nationality, and so provides a range of support services for international students, including financial support for privately-funded students. Japanese language education and services to respond to the wide range of requests from international students are being implemented, and some graduate school courses are now providing special programs to offer education and research direction in English.

A financial support system has been put in place, including The University of Tokyo Fellowship, The University of Tokyo ASATSU DK China Scholarship Fund, and The University of Tokyo Scholarship Fund for International Students, for the purpose of promoting the intake of talented students. For talented Japanese and foreign doctoral students, the University Research Assistantship system provides compensation in return for academic research activities. This support is still not sufficient by the high standards we set for ourselves, but we shall continue proactively and constantly to broaden financial support systems for international students while paying consideration to the financial situation.

Security and comfortable lodgings are essential for attracting outstanding scholars from around the world. In reality, the amount of accommodation that we can provide is much less than the requests that we receive, but in addition to the current International Lodges and International Halls of Residence, the new Kashiwa International Lodge is being constructed on the Kashiwa II Campus and is due to open in October 2009.

The University is planning to increase the number of residential halls, including the Oiwake International Hall of Residence due to be built from 2010.

The University of Tokyo is determined to exert ever greater efforts in order to create an environment that is attractive for international students.

I look forward to meeting you on campus.

Junichi Hamada,   President, The University of Tokyo
