Visits to Universities and High Schools in Sri Lanka to Promote Study in Japan and Strengthen Educational and Research Collaboration

From August 20 to 25, 2026, Prof. Mitsuo Yamamoto of the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo visited various locations across Sri Lanka together with Prof. Hettige Don Karunaratne of Tokyo College, The University of Tokyo, who is a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo and has experienced studying in Japan. During the visits, they engaged in exchanges with local universities, high schools, and related institutions.

During the trip, they traveled approximately 1,600 km within Sri Lanka and visited several universities and a high school, including the University of Ruhuna, the University of Colombo Institute for Agro-technology and Rural Sciences (UCIRAS), the University of Peradeniya, University of Kelaniya, Ananda College, and Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.

In addition, visits were made to the JICA Sri Lanka Office, the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Sri Lanka Office, where discussions were held on the purpose of the visit and future collaboration in education and research.

Many faculty members at Sri Lankan universities have earned doctoral degrees in Japan, and graduates of the University of Tokyo are also active at universities across the country. Through this visit, further growth in the number of students pursuing studies at the University of Tokyo, as well as stronger educational and research collaboration with universities in Sri Lanka, is expected.
