Please give a short introduction about yourself.
I am Yash Thaker, 38 years old, from Mumbai, India. I studied hospitality management in India and Switzerland. As a self employed professional I worked as a corporate communications trainer for many years consulting national and international companies across India. Having trained 9000 employees over 6000 hours made me want to educate myself further for self-development. I decided to come to Japan to explore a completely new life and challenge myself to fulfill the next stage of my career. Hence, I was fortunate to be selected to study Masters’ in International Language Education: TESOL. Each new day in Japan has motivated me to evolve through cultural exposure and learn new academic and business practices that Japan has come to be admired around the world.
What is your favorite thing about Hachioji City?
Hachioji is a good combination of convenient city living and proximity to nature.
In what way has your impression of Hachioji City or Japan changed since coming here?
I was pleasantly surprised at how well Hachioji city is connected to other parts of Tokyo. Having lived here since mid 2016 I realize that the Japanese people are very polite, respectful and courteous. I was pleasantly surprised that they are also the kindest people I have ever met.
What attracted you to choose Soka University as a place to study?
Soka University offers many opportunities for its students to practice what they learn on campus through the World Language Center. Apart from this, the course is designed to meet the requirements of my educational development in a friendly and interactive manner. The course is designed to be relevant for the current requirements in the field of second language education.
In what way did you adjust yourself to Japanese culture?
I learned early on in Japan that personal space and polite manners e.g. talking softly is very important to the Japanese people. I am enjoying learning Japanese cultural aspects and practicing them as I believe that makes me feel at home amongst the Japanese.
Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?
Japan offers a safe, inviting, and exciting opportunity to study internationally along with world-class infrastructure. My University offers amazing assistance to make the students feel at home and the student advisors are always there to assist throughout and beyond academics.
