Please give a short introduction of yourself.
My name is Amrita Kumari. I am from New Delhi, India. I am a doctoral 3rd grade student of Saitama University, Japan. My major is Biochemistry. I am working on the synthesis of carbohydrates as drug against toxic diseases.
What is your favorite thing about Saitama City?
The city where I am living right now and attending college is Saiatam City. It is a beautiful and less crowded city. As compared to Tokyo it is very economic to live in Saitama. There are many Indian restaurants near by University, and this is one of my favorite things about the Saiatama University. The University also serves Halal food especially for food-restricted students (like Muslims). As a girl student, I must say Japan is the safest country in the world.
In what way has your impression of Saitama City or Japan changed since coming here?
Before coming to Japan I was little worried about food and language. But, after eating the original taste of Japan, I must say Japanese food is great. It is healthy, tastes great, and is fun to eat. They have everything from Sushi, to Okonomiyaki. The average Japanese diet is much healthier than others. It is definitely a large part of why Japanese people live so long. Japanese public transport is unbelievably awesome. Japanese people are very kind, polite, punctual, hard-working, formal and clean and always ready to help others. Japan is a great country and a fun place to live and visit.
What attracted you to choose Saitama University as a place to study?
When I came for the very first time to Japan in 2012 for 2 months research training, that time I had a great experience in new work and research environment, so I wanted to pursue Ph.D. in Japan after graduating in India. I also wanted to challenge new language-Japanese. Another reason why I decided to study in Japan was that as I considered the environment in Japan was better suited for foreign students to achieve financial independence, as compared with Europe or the United States. For example, privately financed foreign students who excel in their studies can apply for tuition fees exemption. If successful, the students can often take between 50 and 100 percent of their tuition fees exemption. There is also a relatively wide selection of various scholarships, and I also think it is easy to find part-time work here. I began searching for a graduate school in Japan while studying in India and finally got the opportunity to come to the Saitama University and explore my research while studying in Japan.
In what way did you adjust yourself to Japanese culture?
In terms of my Japanese language, I had a basic grounding in everyday communication thanks to the Japanese classes I took during University, my Japanese friends, Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Foundation (club members) and my home stay family. Another thing that I learnt is to have an understanding of the Japanese culture and ways of thinking. As we all know Japanese people are famous for their time management and punctuality, so I am taking these habits in myself for better production of research. I am able to understand Japan even better after coming to Japan. Japan offers a variety of academic offerings and campus settings to suit your personal interest, your major studies and life goals. Pursue research or internships, master Japanese language, learn anime or martial arts, climb Mt. Fuji-you can do it all in Japan.
