Please give a short introduction of yourself.
I am Onkar Krishna, a Ph.D. scholarin Department of Information and Communication Engineering, The University of Tokyo, Japan (since April 2015). I belong to Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh).
What is your favorite thing about Tokyo?
Japan is well known for the services it provides. It is clearly reflected in the very well connected subway which has not only made life easy but also very safe. To me my personal favorites in Tokyo are its Maple and Sakura trees which make the city very beautiful in Autumn and Cheery Blossom season.
In what way has your impression of Tokyo or Japan changed since coming here?
Before coming here the first things that came to my mind when talked about Japan were Doraemon, Ninja, Robot, Sushi and Manga. Being a vegetarian and a connoisseur, I was scared if I would manage to find vegetarian food around easily or would have to survive only by cooking, but I was surprised to see many India restaurants all across the city and it feels home away from home.
What attracted you to choose The University of Tokyo as a place to study?
I came to Japan on an internship in Hitachi during my masters, and also visited to Aizawa Yamasaki laboratory. The research culture here, the ways ideas are exchanged between people and the way professors assist there students attracted me do pursue my PhD from this university. I got to come here from the MEXT scholarship and fortunately cleared the PhD entrance exams too and here I am pursuing my PhD at the University of Tokyo, one of the most globally renowned universities.
In what way did you adjust yourself to Japanese culture?
If you want to enjoy the culture of a country and enjoy your stay the most important thing you need to do is to learn their language. That is exactly what I did to adjust here. In every semester I take one course of Japanese language offered by University. And now that I understand Japanese basics I can interact more with people around me and understand their culture and having fun now.
Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?
We always listen that Japan is world’s best in Technology and innovation, but studying here for the past 2 years I would say the research culture here is also worth being appreciated. The professors "Sensei" that we call them are more than involved in your work. I can just say it's a great opportunity that I have got, to study here. For others in my country I just want to say "Come here and feel the difference because that is when you can make a difference. There is lotto learn and Japan is the best place you can think of not only in terms of education but also the work culture".
