Please give a short introduction of yourself.
Hello everyone! I am Prarthana Bhattacharyya, originally from Kolkata in India. I am currently a Masters student of Electronic Information and Communication Engineering in the University of Tokyo.
What is your favorite thing about Tokyo?
Tokyo is a city with filled with life and energy. I particularly enjoy Shibuya and Shinjuku filled with vibrant people, the museums and the rich history of Ueno and the shrines of Asakusa and Harajuku. I also find the metro system of Tokyo fascinating!
In what way has your impression of Tokyo or Japan changed since coming here?
Japan is a country prone to earthquakes, and I was a bit apprehensive about what would happen in the event that one occurred. I was surprised however to find that earthquakes rarely caused any disruptions to daily life and people are really well prepared in case there is a big one.
What attracted you to choose The University of Tokyo as a place to study?
The University of Tokyo is one of the most renowned universities’ in the world. The university provides the unique opportunity of interacting with some of the best professors and peers from around the globe, exploring exciting opportunities and being a part of an international community while simultaneously learning the Japanese culture.
In what way did you adjust yourself to Japanese culture?
I attended the Japanese class on campus for international students, and found them to be really enjoyable. I was also part of a Japanese conversation club, and attended several of their events including cooking festivals! I volunteered to visit a Japanese middle school where they introduced me to their culture of Ikebana, Karate, Kendo, Calligraphy etc. I also did a home-stay and was overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality of the Japanese people.
Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?
Japan is a remarkable country with immense opportunities and warm and hospitable people. The possibilities for conducting world-class research and pursuing commercial technological applications are boundless. I also urge you to make the most of it by meeting new people, engaging in new cultures, learning the Japanese language and traditions and exploring this beautiful country!
