Please give a short introduction of yourself.

My name is Hiya Roy. I come from India. I am doing my Masters course in Electrical Engineering and Information Systems from the University of Tokyo. My research lab is situated in ISAS,JAXA. I work in the field of Image processing and Computer Vision.

What is your favorite thing about Tokyo?

My favourite thing about Tokyo is Shinkansen and Sakura Flower. Other than that “its cleanliness”, “convenience of Public Transportation”,”standard of living” and “prompt action and helpfulness of the concerned authority in every spheres of life”make Tokyo one of my favourite cities in the World.

In what way has your impression of Tokyo or Japan changed since coming here?

Before coming to Tokyo, I was a little worried because of the language barrier. When I came here in Japan, I did not know Japanese language. But after coming here, I found Tokyo is very convenient and Japanese people are very kind and helpful. Also, I started learning Japanese language and now after 6 months I am quite comfortable with Japanese language and I have started loving Japan.

What attracted you to choose the University of Tokyo as a place to study?

The University of Tokyo is famous for its research and it is considered to be World’s one of the best academic Institutions. Also, there are lots of opportunities of getting Full scholarships for Masters program which is very attractive to foreign students.

In what way did you adjust yourself to Japanese culture?

Since I come from a totally different cultural background, before coming here I had a perception that it would be difficult for me to adjust with the language, food and culture in Japan. But once I came here, I found that life is so convenient here. Japanese people are so kind and helpful. They are so much interested about knowing the cultures and Tradition of foreign countries as well as sharing their own cultures and tradition to the foreigners. So it was kind of knowing and sharing of different cultures on a broader aspect which I liked the most.

Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?

At first,it may seem difficult to adjust in Japan because of the language barrier and the cultural difference. But once you come to Japan, you will feel that the education system and research works of Japan are of very high standard. Life is really good here in Japan!
