Please give a short introduction of yourself.

I'm Karthik Varada, a graduate student in the department of Technology Management for Innovation. I research about ‘Social Impact Bonds' and the broader field of ‘impact investing' for my Master's research. I finished my bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Hyderabad.

What is your favorite thing about Tokyo?

The sheer magnificence of Tokyo is stunning to me. It has a lot to offer in terms of culinary choices, places to learn and interact, etc.

In what way has your impression of Tokyo or Japan changed since coming here?

It has largely been positive. I'm inspired by the humility of the people in Japan, and their commitment towards the tasks they're at.

What attracted you to choose the University of Tokyo as a place to study?

It’s international reputation, and the diversity of coursework. In particular, the courses offered in my department are from many different fields, and the learning curve is very steep. Also, the department allows me to do a lot of interesting research in emerging fields.

In what way did you adjust yourself to Japanese culture?

Interacting with many Japanese people is the way to go. Attending cultural events and travelling around the country also helped me in appreciating the culture better.

Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?

There’s a lot to learn and embrace from its culture, its people, its organizations, its systems and all of this learning will only make us better and stronger. There will be many challenges along the way, but the people around you will always be there to help you tackle them. With the limited exposure I have, I can say that the experience of living in Japan will be very unique in comparison with any other country.
