Please give a short introduction of yourself.
My name is Divya Anand from Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA. Currently, I am pursuing Ph.D. in Ito & Yokoyama laboratory located in the Department of Advanced Materials Science, Graduate School of Frontier Science, The University of Tokyo, JAPAN from Oct 2015 as a part of JICA Friendship Project-2015.
I completed my Bachelor's degree in Plastic Technology from 2009-2013 at Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology, Lucknow, India and Master's degree in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering from 2013-2015 at Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. I love to participate in all the technical and non-technical initiatives and strongly believe in the fact that, “Winners never quit and Quitters never win”. The University of Tokyo is one of the best choice in that case.

What is your favorite thing about Tokyo?
Tokyo is really a user friendly place. It’s have the best combination of modern and traditional Japan within. It is one of the most populated area of Japan and have invariable no. of foreigner too. I love to experience this multi-cultural society which give me a chance to connect with people from throughout the world.
My personal favourite places in Tokyo include, “Asakusa and the Senso-ji Temple”(Saraswati devi temple- they call her as Benzaiton) ,”The Imperial Palace”(where the royal family reside), “Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Tower”(Touching the heights), “Yokoyama”(for the amusement park and to visit Indian and Chinese markets around), “ Roppongi”(For the night life), Odiba( the fake statue of Liberity) etc,.

In what way has your impression of Tokyo or Japan changed since coming here?
I believe many of us think Japan as known for technology have only hard-working people around but after coming here I realized that they are not only hard-working but also fun loving and adventurous. Hiking, Running etc. are common mode of enjoyment for them. They are always ready to help you even if they have to go out of their way. I can strongly emphasize
about Japanese to be super healthy and enthusiastic even after getting old or rather they never get old physically and by heart.
What attracted you to choose the University of Tokyo as a place to study?
The name of the college itself have enough charm to attract any student as its Asia’s no. 1 apart of that Ito & Yokoyama laboratory have been working on very similar area of research as mine. To be honest I am really blessed to be a part of this group which is headed by Kohzo Ito and Hideaki Yokoyama Sensei.
People are really very helpful and kind. I do get lot of interesting suggestions by them which helps me getting a proper direction for my research. They even values the concept of combining science with technology in order to help the society with some socio-technological innovation.
In what way did you adjust yourself to Japanese culture?
I feel Japan is home away from home. I think there are lot of similarities between the life-style of Indians and Japanese and they worship Indian Gods as well. I love their attitude of professionalism everywhere and every time which is something we are still trying to excel. It’s worth complimenting on Japanese hospitality and similar to Indian they do respect and care for guest/outsiders not their close relations. They place a great store on politeness, in any language, and will respond to your efforts in kind.
Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?
You will love to stay here forever once you visit. Being honest Japanese language will not be a big problem for you as we have more than 385 language throughout India but we are still connected. The technology/Equipment’s which we use here are just the best known throughout so JAPAN is the best place for Technologist.
