Please give a short introduction about yourself.

Hello, I am Divyang Momaya from India. I completed my high school education from Kendriya Vidyalaya before joining Nagoya University for my undergraduate studies in October 2016. My current research topic is related to the field of Nanoelectronics and Flexible Electronics. My hobbies include sports, mainly basketball. Occasionally, I love to take challenges such as triathlon as well. I also like to trek in places of natural beauty, which are plentiful in Japan.

What is your favourite thing about Nagoya?

Nagoya’s central location is one of its best advantages, with easy access to both Eastern as well as Western Japan. Despite being a big city, most parts of Nagoya do not have the hustle and bustle of Tokyo or Osaka. This peaceful atmosphere with few distractions is actually great for studying. There are also several historical/cultural locations in, and scenic natural places around Nagoya. Essentially, Nagoya is a quiet place with a perfect mix of nature, culture and history, an ideal location for students focused on studies or research.

What attracted you to choose Nagoya University as a place to study?

I had an interest in advanced Japanese technologies such as electronics and automobiles, and found that Nagoya University had this unique program which combined Electrical/Electronics with Automotive Engineering. Furthermore, Nagoya is well known as the industrial hub of Japan, home to some amazing companies. The possibility of a great practical learning experience attracted me to choose Nagoya University as a place to study. In addition to that, Nagoya University’s top-level research credentials, evident by its several Nobel laureates and cutting-edge research facilities also attracted me.

In what ways has your impression of Nagoya or Japan changed since coming here?

I had never imagined the levels of great things that can exist in Nagoya before arriving here. The research facilities, industry connect, diversity of courses etc. of Nagoya University have been a revelation. You get to visit several industrial plants if you select courses carefully. Also, I was amazed by the richness of not only Japanese technology, but its natural beauty and cultural heritage too. Despite having heard of Japanese convenience beforehand, it is an entirely different thing to actually experience the convenience of daily tasks, as well as the efficiency and punctuality ingrained in the systems. On the other hand, the differences in culture, food, cost etc. require massive adaptation, particularly if one has never visited Japan before. I also understood that one has to be very diligent to navigate some complex procedures (due to language issues etc.), and start planning and preparing early. Perseverance is essential in order to have win-win experiences in Japan.

Please write a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan.

There are several exciting opportunities to obtain practical education in the science and technological fields in Japan. You can get to learn a lot, if you are prepared to sustain hard work. Try to choose the university and program very carefully to match your needs. Research-intensive programs even at the undergraduate level are a big difference from India, and can be highly beneficial. Also, try to learn the Japanese language as early as possible for survival and beyond. Explore and discover the “Japan that surprises the world” for yourself!
