Please give a short introduction about yourself.

Indranil Mukherjee from Jharkhand, India.
I am a postdoctoral researcher in Center for Ecological Research, Kyoto University.
I received Monbukagakusho scholarship and did my Masters and PhD from Kyoto University.

Please give a simple description of your work at your workplace / laboratory.

I am a microbial ecologist, working on aquatic ecosystems, mainly in freshwater lakes. I study on the ecology of eukaryotic microorganisms in the largest freshwater lake in Japan (Lake Biwa). My work is mainly focussed on understanding the ecological role of these microorganisms, which is important to understand the process occurring in the freshwater environments, especially deep lakes.

What attracted you to choose Kyoto University as a place to pursue your career?

The primary reason for choosing Kyoto University is as it is one of the top universities in the world and has excellent research environment and infrastructure.

How do you like life in Japan and Japanese culture?

Life in Japan is amazing. Japanese people are very polite, honest and helpful so I feel very comfortable everywhere. Daily life here is so convenient that I do not have to worry about anything else and it helps a lot to focus completely on my work. I like Japanese culture and also Japanese food.

Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?

I highly recommend all the students who wish to pursue their higher studies in a foreign country to try for Japan.

Japan has some of the best universities in the world and the standard of education and research is very high. High quality research can be done due to the good infrastructure and availability of various research grants. Japan also offers many scholarships for students and researchers, which provides handsome amount of money to lead life easily. Professors, students and other staffs are very helpful and they take a lot of care for the foreign students. Moreover, there are many employment opportunities after finishing the higher studies.
Thus, Japan provides a great opportunity for higher studies along with learning a new culture and leading a good life.
