Please give a short introduction about yourself.
I am Sathiyamurthi Ramasamy from Tamilnadu, India. I did my Master’s in Madurai Kamaraj University. I completed my PhD in Kyoto University. I am living in Japan since 2013, October. I like sports and sightseeing.
Please give a simple description of your work at your workplace / laboratory.
Currently I am a postdoctoral researcher in National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Tsukuba doing research in Atmospheric Chemistry.
What attracted you to choose NIES as a place to pursue your career?
When I was PhD student, I had a chance to work for five months at NIES, Tsukuba. Highly sophisticated instruments to study atmospheric chemistry and working with experienced research scientists attracted me so much. So that I decided to do postdoctoral research in this environmental specialized institute.
How do you like life in Japan and Japanese culture?
I like climbing mountain in Kyoto and Tsukuba. Plenty of surrounded mountains in Kyoto, natural and greenish pathway of mountains, beautiful view of Kyoto city from the top of mountain, cool breeze and dim sunlight in the evening always attract me to go again. My professor and colleagues brought me to several Japanese restaurants and introduced so many varieties of foods with delicious tastes. Several Japanese foods are now my favorite. Seasonal change is another wonderful thing. Autumn season color change of leaves and spring season cherry blossom brings breathtaking views and enhance the beauty of shrines and forests. Walking and cycling on the small roads passing through agricultural fields in Tsukuba always gives so much pleasure. Small trip and events with Japanese, Indian and international students help to find many friends and spend time with joyful conversations.
I heard many times that Japanese people are kind and working hard. But I did not know the impressive, organized and simplified working style of people here until I live here. Arrangement and filing of day to day reports, very organized documentation and highly effective usage of space such as foldable boxes, multipoint removable racks are always awesome. Very proper planning of meetings and maintaining the schedule accurately is also astonishing me. Another amazing thing is Japanese people always care about other people in public places. For example, on escalators people always stand in one side, walking people and people in hurry move through other side. In buses and trains, they keep their mobile phones in silent mode.

Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?
You can definitely choose Japan for your higher study. Please try applying to MEXT, JSPS scholarships. Science and technology, working style will surely play important role in your life. Before coming to Japan try to learn basic Japanese level at least that will make your living more dynamic and easy. Knowing of even basic level of Japanese can help you in many aspects such as day to day life, making contracts to home and mobile.
