This book is designed for those who are new to the use of economic statistics, aiming to provide them with the basic knowledge necessary for analyzing the real economy. Specifically, it focuses on two key objectives.
First, it aims to provide basic knowledge on how economic statistics are compiled. Economic statistics are produced using various methods, and it is essential to understand the nature and caveats of these statistics based on their compilation methods. For example, to effectively use processed statistics, such as price indexes or GDP, it is crucial to thoroughly understand the methods by which they are compiled and grasp their inherent characteristics and associated errors.
Second, it aims to enhance data literacy so that users can select economic statistics appropriate for their purposes and interpret them correctly. While economic statistics serve various purposes, this book focuses on teaching data literacy for economic statistics, specifically for analyzing economic fluctuations, that is, analyzing business cycles, for which statistics are most commonly needed. By mastering this book, readers can acquire the basic knowledge necessary to use economic statistics independently.
When comparing this book to similar texts, I would highlight its distinctive features; it goes beyond merely summarizing individual statistics or explaining their compilation methods. Furthermore, it provides an in-depth explanation of the various characteristics inherent in each statistic, particularly the errors and biases that must be considered when assessing economic fluctuations. Building on this shared understanding, this study offers practical knowhow on how to effectively use these various statistics.
The environment for compiling Japan’s economic statistics is becoming increasingly challenging, which also affects the accuracy with which economic trends can be understood. First, structural changes in the economy, represented by service sector expansion, digitalization, and globalization, are continuously progressing. Traditional statistical compilation methods are becoming insufficient to comprehend the economy as a whole. Second, the willingness of reporting entities, such as businesses and households, to cooperate with statistical compilation is declining because of social changes and privacy concerns. Furthermore, statistical agencies, including government departments, face severe resource constraints. Despite these challenges, practitioners and other stakeholders are working diligently to improve statistical accuracy, but current results remain insufficient.
This book serves as both a textbook and a practical guide. Accurately grasping economic fluctuations is difficult without a broad practical knowledge of statistics, and it is even possible to make erroneous judgments. This book takes every possible measure to prevent statistics users from getting lost in the “maze” of statistics.
