March 13, 2013

Date of activity: March 11, 2013

It has been two years since the Great East Japan Earthquake. Once again the University of Tokyo expresses profound sorrow for the loss of those who were victims of this terrible disaster, and sincere sympathy to the many people who have been affected by this disaster, many of whom are still forced to live as refugees.

The University of Tokyo’s efforts to support those affected by this disaster are still ongoing. The University will continue support reconstruction in the long term, stressing the importance of our bonds with the affected areas, applying the specialist knowledge that is the University’s strength through volunteer activities of students and academic and administrative staff members.

  • Residents in Otsuchi in Iwate Prefecture formed “Yuikko Otsuchi,” an organization to promote reconstruction. Members collaborated with volunteers from the University of Tokyo to create this Market Square.
