The 2016 Sosei-sen Opening Ceremony Held

July 8, 2016

Date of activity: July 2, 2016

The opening ceremony of the 2016 Sosei-sen (a series of sports competitions between the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University) was held in Ito Hall of the Ito International Research Center of UTokyo on July 2, 2016. Makoto Gonokami, president of UTokyo, Kazuyuki Moriya, chairman of the Kyoto University Sports Union, and Tomokazu Haebara, an executive vice president of UTokyo, attended this ceremony.

The history of the Sosei-sen (formerly called the Comprehensive Competition between the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University) dates back to 1924, when regularly-scheduled games between both universities' sports clubs began being held. Those regular games were integrated into the Sosei-sen in 2009, and this year marks the Sosei-sen's 8th anniversary. The word sosei (literally, "two shades of blue") comes from the school colors of the two universities: light blue for UTokyo and dark blue for Kyoto University.

Since the integration of the games, Kyoto University has won the Sosei-sen four consecutive times, overpowering UTokyo. In recent years, however, UTokyo has become a stronger contender, winning the games both last year and the year before.

At the ceremony, President Makoto Gonokami said: "This year is a very unusual year because both 7-Univ. and Sosei-sen are being held here at UTokyo. I would like the UTokyo students participating to not only be interested in the activities of their own team, but also take an interest in the competitions of other teams, and mutually encourage each other. I want them to aim for a double victory in both competitions."

Competitions in each sport are held successively in both Tokyo and Kyoto, and all games will be completed by the end of the year.
With 7-Univ. and the Sosei-sen being hosted by UTokyo, sports at the University are getting a lot of attention lately. Please watch and cheer for UTokyo's sports teams this year!
