November 18, 2019

Emeritus Professor Toshiro Fujita has been named as a recipient of the Homer W. Smith Award for his outstanding contribution to a deeper understanding of kidney function, particularly as it relates to hypertension.

The Homer W. Smith Award is given by American Society of Nephrology, presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions which fundamentally affect the science of nephrology, broadly defined, but not limited to, the pathobiology, cellular and molecular mechanisms and genetic influences on the functions and diseases of the kidney. Established in 1964, this award recognizes one of the major intellectual forces in renal physiology. Dr. Fujita is the first Asian recipient of the award.

The award presentation took place during the plenary session on November 10, 2019, at ASN Kidney Week 2019 in Washington D.C.
