Statement from the President on the Indictment of Former Faculty Members

Today (February 13), former Professor Shinichi Sato and former Project Associate Professor Ayumi Yoshizaki, both of the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Tokyo, were indicted.

I deeply apologize for the trouble and concern this has caused so many people.

At our press conference on January 28, we explained the facts of this case as known to us. We understand that the matter will now be clarified through judicial proceedings.

The indictment of former faculty members severely undermines the public trust placed in our university, and we regard it as something that should never occur at an institution of education and research.

We will carry out our reforms, which are already underway, with unwavering resolve, and we will work to restore public trust by rebuilding our governance framework.

Once again, I offer my heartfelt apologies to all those who have been affected by this matter.
