UTokyo President's congratulatory message on alumnus Syukuro Manabe receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics

October 5, 2021

Congratulations to Dr. Syukuro Manabe on being awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Dr. Manabe graduated from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Science in 1953 and received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Mathematics and Physics. Following his Ph.D., Dr. Manabe went to the United States of America to work on climate research at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). During his time at GFDL, he developed the world’s first general circulation model of the coupled atmosphere-ocean-land system, which clarified the impact of rising concentrations of carbon dioxide on the climate and contributed a wealth of fundamental research on global warming and climate research.

My sincere congratulations to Dr. Manabe for this recognition of his achievements.

Teruo Fujii
President, The University of Tokyo
