The University of Tokyo and Tsinghua University: Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Partnership and holding of the Joint Symposium

At 11:30am of Monday, 23 July 2018 the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Partnership between the University of Tokyo and Tsinghua University was held in the Kaitokukan. In addition to related faculty members from both universities, former President GU Binglin and Vice President XUE Qikun of Tsinghua University and President Makoto Gonokami, Executive Vice President Masashi Haneda, and Vice President Naoto Sekimura of the University of Tokyo were present at the ceremony, along with faculty members from both universities involved in the strategic partnership project, to officially sign the MoU and to discuss future collaborations between the two universities.

In the afternoon, the “The University of Tokyo and Tsinghua University Joint Symposium 2018” was held in the Takeda Hall with approximately 200 participants attending the symposium. In addition to the Joint Symposium, workshops and other events spanning twelve different academic fields were held between 19 to 25 July, resulting in a diverse and interdisciplinary exchange.

The University of Tokyo’s “Building a Global Campus Model” was selected to be part of MEXT’s “Top Global University Projects”. As Strategic Partnerships are at the core of constructing the University’s Global Campus Model, through this opportunity of establishing and signing of the memorandum, not only are student exchanges and joint research expected within such framework but further collaboration and exchanges in a wide range of academic fields are also anticipated.
