Around 250 participants, including faculty, staff, students and members from the private sector involved in Japan-India collaborations, attended the symposium.

The symposium consisted of two parts, with the theme of “Purpose and Perspective of the Japan India Exchange Platform Program” for the first part and “Achievement and Future Perspective of the Inter-University Exchange Project (India)” for the second.

At the beginning of Part 1, Professor Masashi Haneda, executive vice president of UTokyo; Mr. Kasumi Shindo, director of the Office for International Planning, Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; and Mr. Raj Kumar Srivastava, chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Embassy of India in Japan, gave short opening speeches. Professor Naoto Sekimura, vice president of UTokyo, then introduced the Japan India Exchange Platform Program.

The keynote speech was given by Professor Akio Tanabe of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, UTokyo, on “History and Contemporary Significance of Japan-India Intellectual Exchange.”

During the poster session held over the lunch break, universities selected for the Inter-University Exchange Project and other related organizations explained their activities.

Following lunch, lectures were given by Professor Mahesh Panchagnula, dean of International & Alumni Relations, IIT Madras, and Mr. Tenpei Oda, deputy general manager of the Indian High Speed Rail Division, International Affairs Headquarters, East Japan Railway Company. These were followed by a panel discussion on “Japan-India Government Academia Industry Collaboration and Development of Human Resource,” with Associate Professor Kohei Nagai from the Institute of Industrial Science of UTokyo moderating the discussion with six panelists from various fields.
