Guidelines on Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity at the University of Tokyo

June 1, 2026

As stated in the University of Tokyo Charter and our Statement on Diversity & Inclusion, the University of Tokyo guarantees that all members of our community should be free from discrimination, based on our recognition of the importance of diversity in our constituent members. In accordance with these principles, we aim to enable “people of diverse origins and backgrounds” to “expand their horizons through interaction and dialogue with one another” and to “create an attractive and inclusive campus” in order to build together “a university that anyone in the world would want to join” (quotations from UTokyo Compass).

In February 2024, as one step toward this goal, UTokyo formulated and published our Guidelines for Students on Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, with the aim of creating an environment where every member of the university community, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, could feel secure and comfortable in campus life, based on the fundamental principles of respecting diversity and promoting inclusion.

The guidelines are subject to revision as appropriate with the changing times, while maintaining our basic stance of recognizing and respecting diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity. With that in mind, the University has revised those student guidelines and issued the new Guidelines on Diversity in Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, which now apply to all members of our community.

The University of Tokyo will continue to review these guidelines as appropriate while maintaining our fundamental commitment to recognizing and respecting diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity.
