General Library’s digital archives now available through the Internet Archive

February 17, 2021

The UTokyo Academic Archives Project Office has launched a partnership with the Internet Archive (archive.org) to share digital resources made public by the General Library.

The Internet Archive includes a repository of billions of webpages from throughout the world and has partnerships with hundreds of libraries and universities for the digital archiving of many types of resources.

The establishment of this partnership was coordinated by Professor Tom Gally of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

The materials from the General Library now available through the Internet Archive include 4180 items from 25 collections, all of which can be used freely without prior permission. At the Internet Archive, these materials can be viewed online as well as downloaded as PDFs.

Also available at the UTokyo Academic Archives Portal, these items can now be found through searches of the Internet Archive’s vast range of resources from institutions throughout the world.

The UTokyo Academic Archives Project Office plans to continue making the academic resources of the University of Tokyo available throughout the world.

The Internet Archive is one of the largest libraries in the world and home of the Wayback Machine, a repository of 475 billion webpages. Founded in 1996 by Internet Hall of Fame member Brewster Kahle, the Internet Archive now serves more than 1.5 million patrons each day, providing access to 70 petabytes of data—books, web pages, music, television, and software—and working with more than 800 library and university partners to create a digital library, accessible to all.
