The National Universities in Japan became National University Corporations on April 1, 2004. Institutes attached to the National University Corporations became responsible for accelerating collaboration betwen industry, academia and the public sector by opening themselves widely to industry in order to return their research results to society. To promote this flow of information about their research and its results to society and to contribute societal welfare, ten institutes in the field of life science banded together to organize international symposia.
The International Symposium of the Institute Network is held every year to build an organic network among national university corporations' institutes which enables them to create new academic fields, cooperate with industry, academia and the public sector on a large scale and also cultivate a broader vision in their young researchers than any single institute can acting alone.
In 2017, the Institute of Medical Science (IMS) hosts the joint symposium of the 12th International Symposium of the Institute Network, and the International Symposium joins in celebrating IMS's 125th Founding Anniversary and 50th Reorganization Anniversary with the theme of "Driving Next-Generation Medicine: the Spirit of Pioneering Discovery in Medical Science".
