What is Three Minute Thesis (3MT)?

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an international public speaking competition for active PhD students. Founded by the University of Queensland in 2008, the competition is now held at over 900 universities in more than 85 countries worldwide.

Nowadays being able to talk about your research to a diverse audience - from the general public to policy makers to fellow researchers - is increasingly important. Even if you know your work inside out, how easy do you find it to convey its importance and your passion?

3MT is a great opportunity to challenge yourself, work on your presentation and communication skills, meet your peers and share your work on an international stage. This year’s event will again be held online and presentations will be pre-recorded. This makes it a great chance for students who are not very confident in English or with their public speaking skills.

The challenge is to engagingly explain your research in a short video presentation:

  • • in English
  • • to a non-specialist audience
  • • with only 1 slide
  • • in less than 3 minutes!

The first step is to complete the online application form below by Monday, May 9th at 9:00am

Up to 20 students will be selected to create and record their 3 minute presentations. You will be notified of the results on Friday, May 13th.

Successful applicants will be given free science communication training before preparing their presentations, and offered a chance to receive feedback before submitting their video entry. If you are successful you will be asked which sessions you can attend (please see the schedule below). The deadline for video submissions isTuesday, June 21st at 9:00am

All videos will be featured on the University of Tokyo’s YouTube channel for People’s Choice Award voting before the online Final and Awards ceremony on Saturday, July 9th.

There are three cash research prizes* for the Winner, the Runner Up and the People’s Choice Award! The overall UTokyo Winner will be entered into the Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition later this year, for a chance to win a AU$5,000 research prize.

Entry is free, so why not give it a go?

*Please note that cash research prizes are for use by the winning students, but will be distributed to their research lab / group to be managed on the student's behalf.
